The district will begin three major construction projects this summer that will improve Crenshaw Middle School, the STEAMM Academy @ Hartford, and the Canton City Transportation Department.
At Crenshaw, the project will be a 15,444-square-foot gymnasium near the northeast corner of the school. This is in addition to the construction project happening now to create more space for career and technical education classes. That 9,199-square-foot addition will house CTE programs, such as industrial arts and computer-assisted design.
The new gym area will feature a full-size basketball court, a 2,585-square-foot locker room that can be divided into smaller locker rooms, meeting rooms, restrooms, and storage spaces. An indoor walking track will encircle the basketball court and a 2,888-square-foot lobby area will connect the gymnasium to the school. This area will become the new main entrance for the school and the school offices will relocate here.
Superintendent Jeff Talbert said the former administrative offices will become a family resource center where community organizations can be housed so they can better connect to families who need resources.
The STEAMM Academy will see a new 9,085-square-foot multipurpose gymnasium with a rubberized floor and restrooms. It will be built on the school’s football field at 1824 Third St. SE. The building will include a 12,000-square-foot mezzanine level that can be used for classrooms and community space. The facility will be connected to the school by an enclosed walkway.
The school will also install a pond, crops, and an eco-lab to complement the academy’s existing greenhouse and agricultural program.
Finally, an addition to the bus garage is planned to allow for meeting space for the district’s 110 bus drivers, assistants, and transportation staff.
The projects are expected to cost roughly $11 million and will be funded by the coronavirus relief funds.
The plans (shown below) are subject to change based on budget limitations and the rising costs of construction and materials.
