McKinley High School engineering students Collin Morrison and Kaden Smith took home the gold medal this week at the annual SkillsUSA Ohio State Championships in Columbus! 

In their engineering competition, students competed in Robotics: Urban Search and Rescue. The Urban Search & Rescue competition consisted of designing and building a remote controlled robot that will locate simulated ordinances within a structure. The driver of the vehicle could only monitor the course through a closed circuit monitoring system. With the first place win, Morrison and Smith will represent McKinley High School at the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia during the week of June 20th.  

Jacqueline Walker, SkillsUSA Ohio State Association Director, explains, “The SkillsUSA Framework is the core of our program and helps students gain the critical employability skills and 21st Century Skills, which we know employers need.”  

Students and staff in several of the McKinley High School Career-Technical Education programs competed on May 3rd for the 70th anniversary of the competition. This event is the premier Ohio Showcase for Career-Technical Education and was held for the first time in 3 years due to COVID.  

Students in Automotive Technology, Broadcast Media, Building Technology, Commercial Photography, Culinary Arts, Performing Arts, and Engineering: Project Lead the Way spent the day competing in a variety of contests that included CTE students from all over the state of Ohio.
