MUNSON STADIUM IS THE OFFICIAL HOME OF McKINLEY BASEBALL
Canton City Council and the School District have agreed on a 25-year deal that makes Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium the official home of McKinley Baseball.
The Board of Education voted in January to enter into a 25-year joint development and use agreement with the City of Canton, which owns the stadium. As part of that agreement, the district will make improvements to the property. (City Council approved the deal Feb. 22, 2021.)
McKinley Baseball will have primary use of the field while the district may also use the premises for school-sponsored, non-baseball activities. The fields will be used for Varsity, JV, and Freshmen baseball practices and games, as well as the McKinley Summer Baseball Program.
Funding for the planned improvements comes from the money that was set aside for new turf for Fawcett Stadium before it was torn down. That $550,000 will go, in part, to adding new infield turf for Monson’s main field, fence replacement, a new scoreboard, updated dugouts, and new batting cages.
The district will receive all revenue from ticket sales, tournament fees, concessions, and advertising. The city will be responsible for all utilities and maintenance.
Superintendent Jeffery Talbert that this agreement is beneficial to both the district and the city.
“I am very pleased with this partnership that will allow us to provide first-class facilities to our student-athletes. We look forward to watching Munson Stadium be restored and for our baseball program to have a place to call home,” he said, adding that he is thankful for the city and the Canton Parks and Recreation Department for making this venture possible.
