Superintendent Talbert today announced revisions to the Design For Excellence Proposal which will be discussed at the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
McGregor will become a grade 4-6 building. Students will move there from Cedar following K-3. Based on our detailed study of the map showing where our students live in the district, we believe the McGregor building will be big enough to house the number of students who wish to attend there. Throughout our Listening Tours we received a lot of concern from parents about students on the SW end having to drive all the way across the city. After looking at options, we determined the best solution to this would be to make McGregor a 4-6 building.
AIM Academy @ Fairmount will relocate to the Belden. We want the balanced-calendar school to be housed in a building that allows it to grow and welcome more students in grades K-6. Belden can accommodate that goal. Students who now attend Belden will have several options. They can relocate to Patrick, apply for the AIM Academy, or attend the STEAMM Academy beginning in 4th grade. We will also continue to have open enrollment within the district, as long as the student has transportation.
Since Belden will no longer be an Intermediate Building, Patrick will now be a K-6 building. Because of the change to McGregor there are not enough students to fill Patrick and Belden. Making Patrick a K-6 fills the building and increases efficiency for the district while giving the families in this community a neighborhood school.
While this will be presented to the Board as part of the Design for Excellence plan the changes will not be offered for approval until the regular Board meeting on March 8, 2021. Between now and then we will hold Listening Tour meetings with Belden, Patrick and AIM parents and staff to give them an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the changes.
