The district is proud to announce that McKinley Senior High School was awarded a $525,000 Comprehensive Literacy State Development Sub Grant from the Ohio Department of Education.

Deputy Superintendent Mallory Floyd announced the award at the February 8 Board of Education meeting.

She credited a small team who was able to navigate their workload in the midst of many challenges associated with the pandemic and write the grant on behalf of McKinley. The group was led by Peggy Savage Director of School Improvement for 6-12 and Dr. Lynn Rudd, Curriculum Specialists for grades 6-12. Included on this team were Gary Kandel, Director of Teaching and Learning Innovation, Jonas Wertin, McKinley Sr. High school principal, and Debbie Hartwig, the district’s Literacy partner from State Support Team 9

The money will be used to create an instructional framework that embeds literacy in all subject areas through ongoing professional development.

“We want 100% of our students reading on grade level and performing at high levels as measured by our local and state testing measures,” Floyd told the board. “This vision will utilize literacy coaches who will collaborate with classroom teachers integrating relevant data and literacy skills within their lesson design and delivery.”
