CCSD AWARDED GRANT FROM DEPT. OF HIGHER ED
The Canton City School District recently was awarded a Human Capital Strategies Grant in the amount of $50,000 to help increase the percentage of minority teaching staff members.
The grant, awarded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education, for the maximum amount that can be awarded.
According to CCSD Director of Student Family Community Support and State & Federal Programs, Deidre K. Stokes Davis, the grant will help fund the initiative, “You Are Needed at Home.” It will employ a variety of strategies to increase the diversity of the district’s educators.
Despite having a 60% minority student population, only 18% of CCSD’s employees are minority.
With the help of the Cleveland Area Minority Educator’s Recruitment Association, the district will create a new Educators Rising chapter in order to attract and prepare minority students for a future in education. It will also facilitate an Ohio Assessment for Educators Boot Camp to help coach individuals who are preparing for their licensure exams.
Stokes Davis added that the district plans to invest in its own, “Grow Your Own” program, with a focus on recruiting candidates from among Timken Early College High School students, paraprofessionals, after-school program staff and other Canton community members. The district is currently partnering with Western Governors University and Walsh University to implement the goals of the grant.
