McKinley Students Attend International Education Celebration

On Saturday, November 8, as a part of The International Education Week celebration, McKinley students and staff attended the Columbus International Festival, where they had a great time learning about the culture of the 80 countries that showed products, crafts and foods; they also enjoyed the traditional dances and costumes, and....shopping as well! 88 students were able to attend, yes, 88 , and they behaved well!
A thank you to Mrs. Stokes-Davis for her support, to our Foreign Language teachers, to Georgia Robinson, and to Ms. Miles, Ms. Spence, and Ms. Walker for their wonderlful help.

Arts Academy at Summit Honors Veterans

A flag to honor Veterans was made by students and staff from the Arts Academy at Summit. It consists of student and staff photos (the red stripes). The white stripes are made up of acrostic poems written by students using words that represent America. The first letter of each word is a letter in the student's name. The flag is very big and is currently hanging in the gym.

Inner-city kids talk about what they want from an Obama presidency

They won't be able to vote for nearly a decade, but some kids in Canton know their politics. Fifth and sixth graders from Belden Elementary, an inner-city Canton school closely followed the presidential election and believe in Barack Obama's message of change. They also have a few ideas of their own for the president-elect.

Hartford Middle Schooler named Academic All Star - Hartford Teacher named Teacher of the Month

Kolbi Ross, a seventh grader at Hartford Middle School, recently was named an Academic All Star by the Ohio Lottery for the month of October. He represents the Akron/Canton region.

Ross was described as a student with a "wonderful" mind who "works very hard and constantly shows the desire to learn no matter what comes his way."

Ross will receive four tickets to a Cleveland Browns' game, recognition at the event, team merchandise and an assortment of Partners in Education merchandise from the Ohio Lottery.

Hartford seventh- and eighth-grade special education teacher Heidi Flohr was named October Teacher of the Month by the lottery and represents the Akron-Canton area.

Flohr is described as "an advocate" for the school's special needs students. She takes students on field trips when there is little or no money. She "makes her students feel that they can succeed and they do because of her perseverance." Flohr was the head of the school's Intervention Assistance Team and has assisted as the head of the Special Education Department; neither of which were paid positions.

Flohr will receive four tickets to a Lake Erie Monsters' game, recognition at the event, team merchandise and an assortment of Partners in Education merchandise from the Ohio Lottery.

The lottery will continue to recognize Academic All Stars and Teachers of the Month throughout the school year.

National Young Readers

Belden Elementary students and staff kicked off National Young Readers Week with an
assembly in which Mayor Healy read his favorite book, The Seven Chinese Brothers. Students in sixth grade competed for the opportunity to introduce Mayor Healy by writing a high quality introduction. Sixth grader Sierrah Campbell was chosen to introduce the mayor, and runner up Robert Stevenson gave closing remarks. Third grade students participated in a Writer’s Workshop where they created letters describing what they would do if they were mayor for the day. One student was chosen from each third grade class to read their letter at the assembly. Amber Young said, “As mayor, I would donate food to the families in need.” Mekeyla Ellis-Davenport wrote, “First, I would make myself mayor forever because I am a good person.” Mayor Healy went on to surprise Amber and Mekeyla by inviting them to work as Mayor for the day on December 2^nd. Next week, Belden will host many community celebrities who will share their favorite books. Some of those celebrities include Michele Evans-Gardell, Todd Porter, Councilwoman Chris Smith, and Frank Forchione.

More Than Eighty Girls Got Technical at Timken High School

More than 80 girls from grades 6 - 8 spent Saturday, October 18th at Timken Senior High School getting hands on experience in a variety of non-traditional career fields. Betsy Engels from the Timken Company spent the first hour with the girls. She brought eight engineers with her and all the girls worked on an assembly line project with the crew from the Timken Company. From there, the girls rotated to the following classes:

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Electronics, PLTW Design, Building Trades, Industrial Plant Engineering and Auto Tech.

In each class, the girls participated in hands-on activities and had many projects to take home with them. They were asked to fill out an evaluation at the end of the day with the majority of participants rating every activity in the "GREAT" category. Unanimously, each girl said they enjoyed every aspect of the day. It was a great success!

1. Fawcett Stadium (Canton, Ohio)
Located adjacent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the site since 1962 of the annual preseason Hall of Fame Game, the 70-year-old structure currently is a home field for three high schools -- famed Canton McKinley, Timken and two NAIA colleges, Walsh and Malone. Named after local civic leader and school board president John Fawcett, the venue has an NFL flavor with artificial turf, a pro-style press box and lighting system. The Ohio state high school playoffs uses this site, along with nearby Paul Brown Stadium in Massillon, for its six championship games.
