A GED is equivalent to a high school diploma and is accepted by most colleges and employers. The GED tests your ability to read, write, do math (including basic algebra and geometry) and answer social studies and science questions at a high school level. If you can read at a high school level now you may be a good GED candidate. If your reading skills are lower than high school level you may need to take a pre-GED class to improve your reading before you take a GED class or the GED test. A GED is a good way for a person to demonstrate that they have learned the same things as a high school graduate even if they don't have the high school credits to graduate.

How can I determine my current skill level and find out how long it would take me to earn a GED?

We can give you a free assessment to determine your reading and math skill levels. Some students find that their skills are already high enough to take the GED test without attending GED classes, but most students need some GED preparation. After you take the assessment our counselor can tell you about how long it would take you to prepare for the GED test, or, if you find you need no further preparation, she can help you register for the GED test.

Canton City Schools offer three ways for you to study for the GED test:

1. You can attend free GED classes either mornings or evenings. In class you can work in a small group with a teacher, one-on-one with a tutor, and study on the computer. If you have children under the age of 12 you may want to select one of our free Even Start classes where you can earn a GED and explore new ways to help your children to be successful in school at the same time. Parents enrolled in Even Start also get free tutoring for their preschool or elementary aged children.

 2. If regular morning or evening classes don't fit your schedule you can set your own study schedule in our GED lab located in the Canton YWCA. The GED lab is free and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You decide how often and when you want to attend.

 3. You can study at home by watching the GED programs on Canton City Schools Television (CCSTV). The programming airs every weekday at 9 a.m. and repeats at 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on CCSTV, which broadcasts on Time Warner cable position 11 in the Canton area. We'll give you the free workbooks that go along with the TV show, and you'll only have to meet with your teacher once every few weeks.

 How can I register?

It's simple. New students can register any Monday year round (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Stark County District Library located at 715 Market Ave. North in downtown Canton. No appointment is necessary -- just walk in and ask for the GED Center. Registration takes less than an hour.

 For more information:
Canton City Schools
Adult Education
330-438-2559

Return to top of page

Medical Assisting

Medical Assisting

We are Accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants and were recipients of a 10 year Medical Assisting accrediation, which is not typical for many Medical Assisting Programs.

The Medical Assisting Program is a 900 clock hour program that provides adults with skills and abilities needed to work as assistants to physicians. Medical assistants help physicians with examinations, treatments, and office surgery; perform diagnostic tests and simple laboratory procedures; and sterilize equipment. They also receive patients; prepare medical histories; maintain medical records; and handle correspondence, telephone communications, fees and collections. Students gain practical experience in the clinical portion of the curriculum. At the end of the program, students will perform 160 hours of supervised, unpaid externship in a medical facility.

This program prepares students for entry-level positions as a medical assistant in a physician's private practice, public service, hospital-based outpatient clinics, or medical laboratories. The program serves as a solid foundation for various allied health professions.

The programs of the Canton City Schools Adult Education Department change lives by providing resources for individuals to improve their overall quality of life. In 1997, the department was awarded a "full service center" designation for providing a wide range of educational programs to adults in the Canton area. This is the only full service adult education department in Stark County and one of only 40 in Ohio.
