THAT TEACHING TOUCH

Apple’s iPod technology is helping to put learning at the fingertips of students in classrooms across the Twin Cities and the country.

The iPod Touch has been a godsend for Jon Smith, a fifthand sixth-grade special-education teacher at Gibbs Elementary School in Canton, Ohio. His students have a variety of learning disabilities that often cannot be overcome with regular teaching methods. But something as simple as flashcard slide shows on touch screen iPods, with finger
swipes for moving from one digital photo to the next, tends to electrify the kids. So Smith has nudged his superiors into spending more money on the Apple devices. His kids now rack up impressive scores with vocabulary drill apps, devour social-studies moving-picture books, and even watch videos of themselves delivering book reports. This footage, after being taken with low-cost video cameras, is transferred to a computer and then synced to the kids’ iPods. Smith delights in seeing “a sparkle in the kids’ eyes." To view story in its entirety, please click the following links: article1; article2

SIT IN THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE!!!

For the first time, you have an opportunity to own a piece of Fawcett Stadium in the form of a Private Seat License (PSL). There are 46 (moveable) Private Seat Licenses on the roof of the newly renovated press box available for purchase. Owning a PSL will give you the ability to purchase tickets to any applicable event in the stadium. As a PSL holder, you must commit to purchasing season tickets for the high school season each year. If this commitment is not met, your PSL will again be offered up for sale.

Private Seat Licenses (PSLs) are often offered in premium sports facilities. The PSL charge is paid once by the seat owner and in the following years, the PSL owner pays a small maintenance fee per seat and has an obligation to continue to buy a season ticket.

We are offering these seats at an initial price of $1,000 per seat. There will be a maintenance charge of $50 per seat per year that will cover any seat replacement, etc. As a PSL owner, you have the ability to choose to purchase tickets for any of the following events (for some special events, you may not be able to sit in your roof seats, but you will be offered a premium seat at the event). Events include:

                                    McKinley home football games

                                    Timken home football games

Playoff games (not including championship games)

                                    Enshrinement ceremony

                                    HOF fame game

                                    Special events (concerts, etc.)

If you choose not to buy tickets to events above, the seats for those events will be offered up for sale to the public.
Action Steps to Protect Your Family from the FLU

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 4 main ways you and your family may keep from getting sick with the flu at school and at home:
1. Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder; not into your hands.
3. Stay home if you or your child is sick for at least 24 hours after there is no longer a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others.
4. Get your family vaccinated for seasonal flu and 2009 H1N1 flu when vaccines are available.
Follow these steps to prepare for the flu during the 2009-2010 school year:
· Plan for child care at home if your child gets sick or their school is dismissed.
· Plan to monitor the health of the sick child and any other children in the household by checking for fever and other symptoms of flu.
· Identify if you have children who are at higher risk of serious disease from the flu and talk to your healthcare provider about a plan to protect them during the flu season. Children at high risk of serious disease from the flu include: children under 5 years of age and those children with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma and diabetes.
· Identify a separate room in the house for the care of sick family members.
· Update emergency contact lists.
· Collect games, books, DVDs and other items to keep your family entertained if schools are dismissed or your child is sick and must stay home.
For more information visit: www.flu.gov
